Who We Are...
Industrial Metal Supply Company is a full line metal service
center and retailer serving Southern California and Arizona metal users
since 1948. Now almost sixty years old, IMS services its customers from
five branch locations that each offer will-call centers and large retail
showrooms for same day service, as well as a fleet of 40 trucks
providing next day delivery. Our customers consistently tell us that the
personal, responsive service IMS offers is unlike any other in the
business, and it’s what keeps them coming back year after year. Every
single IMS employee has a single focus and that is to save our customers
time — it’s the most valuable asset we can give them,
so we do, everyday.
Our
History...
Norman Sherman opened his scrap and surplus business in 1948
in Burbank, California. He, along with his wife Sally, worked out of the
back end of their 1947 Pontiac station wagon that served as the first
delivery vehicle by day and the family car by night.
Over
the years market demand required a second facility be
opened, and in 1989 Norman opened the second IMS facility in
Irvine. Four years later, the biggest trauma in the
company’s history occurred when IMS increased the minimum
sale from 50 cents to $1—
this is still in effect today.
As business continued to grow
deeper into Southern California, IMS opened the third
branch, this time in San Diego in 1995. This branch quickly
outgrew its first facility and expanded into larger quarters
in 1998.
In August of 2000, IMS ventured interstate, into Arizona,
acquiring a Phoenix-based company called Capitol Metals. In
June 2001, Capitol Metals moved into a brand new 83,000 sq.
ft. building, expanding the inventory and adding hundreds of
new items to their product line. Early in 2006 the Capitol
Metals name was changed to Industrial Metal Supply Co.
By 2002, IMS had long outgrown
its original facility in Burbank, which had expanded to over
80,000 square feet of warehouse and retail services. In July
2002 the branch moved to a larger, brand new facility in Sun
Valley which offers its customers a greatly improved
shopping experience with over 14,000 square feet of retail
showroom and 95,000 square feet of warehouse along with many
new items to choose from.
IMS Customers...
A wide range of businesses, from machine shops and
fabricators, to the military, schools and movie studios use IMS
everyday. In addition, with no minimums and 400,000 square feet of
retail, individual consumers ranging from artists to engineers, teachers
and students also depend on IMS for their metal requirements.
To fulfill the diverse needs of
these varied markets, IMS stocks the largest variety of
mill-direct metals in Southern California. Steel, Aluminum,
Stainless, Tool Steel, Brass, Copper, Silicon-Bronze and
Lead are on hand in a wide selection of shapes and sizes.
Customers can also purchase specialty items from stock, such
as decorative brass, stainless steel railing systems, and
imported hand-forged ornamental iron for architectural and
ornamental use.
Recent customer surveys reveal that IMS is the vendor of
choice because of fast response to the customer's needs. All
requests for quote are returned promptly, orders are
processed for same day or for next day delivery. Items not
in inventory will be transferred from another facility
within 24 hours or brokered to meet the customer request.
Additional customer services are shearing, band sawing, and
aluminum precision plate sawing, all performed on premises
at each IMS location.
For convenience, IMS accepts most major credit cards, and
ATM transactions. Retail and warehouse facilities are open
to the public Monday through Friday and half day on
Saturdays in all five locations.
